Brno Transport Hub

Our proposal for the new Brno Transport Hub goes beyond infrastructure architecture to become an active urban enclave in Brno. Its strategic position in the city will determine the relationship between the historical centre, the new development and the surrounding areas. It is our concept to transform what used to be a barrier into a connecting node with an attractive programmatic offer. Brno transport hub is the gateway for all passengers arriving to Brno by train and bus.
Contemporary Transport Hubs are hybrid systems that include commercial, residential, leisure and cultural programs while keeping the purpose of being an interchange transport node as a priority. Following the lineal renovation process of the ‘Ringstrasse’ area – which started with the creation of public buildings and the construction of Janacek Theatre afterwards – we think it is necessary to re-invent the character of this place in order to face the 21st century demands for the area to be a public, flexible and permeable space active 24/7, and integrated to the city programmatic frame.
Mobility is thus the core concept of Brno Transport Hub. We envision a new station extension that rejects the mono-functional building type, and rather creates a series of interconnected buildings in a strong dialogue with the public space. This dense urban node will organise the connexion between the local network of tram and buses with the national and international rail transport. At the same time, it serves the whole city circulation network with vehicles, bikes and slower forms of movement.
